Hello, dear friends!
I am going to show you an epic fail on my first attempt at covering a lamp shade. I've never done this before on my blog. I've had plenty of fails, I just never show them.
Here is my lamp fixed and set up in the nursery ~

Here goes ~
I bought this lamp from Goodwill for $6.99. I was hoping to keep this project simple and cheap since I had gotten such a good deal on the lamp in the first place. The shade was ugly with glue dripping out from underneath the blue ric-rac and seriously needed to be covered.
I bought this pretty ribbon from Hobby Lobby and hoped to cover the whole shade with it. As I hot glued all the way around, layer by layer, I glued on some parts that ended up being very crooked and some of the ribbon was even made stitched off center as well. The whole thing looks janky and was so frustrating. A lot of people still told me it was cute and to keep it this way. I just couldn't do it. I want it to fit into a child's room, not look like a child made it!
I swapped out the blue star on the lamp pull for a pretty pink rose pull from the jewelry section of Hobby Lobby.
Anyway, I decided to cover the ribbon on the lamp shade with muslin ruffles. I found some cute pictures on Pinterest and two great tutorials from two really nice bloggers! Samantha from Crafty Texas Girls did a wonderful job with her lamp and tutorial. She even e-mailed me back when I had a question about her lamp. I wanted to know if the hot glue ever got warm enough to start dripping down the lamp. She assured me that this has never happened with her lamps. How sweet is that? You can see her post here.
I also love what Emily Sue over at The Netzfamily did with her lamp shade. You can see that post here.
My version isn't as cute as either of theirs, or as scrunched together for the super full look. It just didn't work for my small lamp or the small amount of strips I had ruffled.
This is what I did to fix the shade ~
I cut several strips of the muslin material and took my sewing machine to my Mom's to have her teach me how to sew a seam in the center of the fabric to make the ruffles. Turns out that the sewing machine that a friend picked up for me was broken all along. Yet another snag in getting the lamp done!
I took the strips to a wonderful friend from church. She sewed the strips for me and came over to help me ruffle the ribbons
We made the ruffles by hand, being careful not to break the thread as we made the ruffles by pushing the fabric to the center of the strip.
I hot glued at the center of the seam
and attached the ruffle to the lamp shade
I stitched the ends together on each row until the all the ruffles were glued in place.
The lamp finally done and in place.
Have a great day!
